Drogue Chute from Truck Bed?
Assisting with Bicycle Races as an Amateur Radio Operator and owning a Ranger 4×4, with an interest in parachutes got me thinking (military does it with tanks, vehicles, & supplies from a C130 all the time…). Would it be possible/probable to pull a welded frame skid from the back of a pickup bed with the tailgate down carrying 2 Water Coolers carrying 5 gal each, and an igloo cooler carry bananas, pickles…etc? The Truck would be traveling at approximately 60-65mph and would want the skid to stop as quickly as possible. How large would the drogue chute canopy have to be?
The skid will stop pretty quick once it hits the ground! What the chute needs to do is provide enough drag to pull if off the truck, against friction.
If the truck bed is about 3 feet off the ground, the “flight time” till the sled hits the ground will be less than half a second, so you can forget about trying to slow the sled down while it is in the air.
Doing a very rough calculation::
A (UK) gallon of water weighs 10 pounds so you have 100 poinds of water plus the sled and the rest of the stuff. Say it’s 130 pounds total or about 60 kg.
The coefficient of friction between the sled and the truck is probably about 0.5 so you need a drag force of 60 x 0.5 x g = about 300 N to unstick it from the truck bed.
60 mph = 60 x 1600 / 3600 m/s = 27 m/s.
Density of air = about 1.2 kg/m^3
Assume the drag coefficient of a chute is the same as a flat plate, about 1.28.
The drag force for an area A is (1/2) rho v^2 A x 1.28
0.5 x 1.2 x 27^2 x 1.28 x A = 300
A = 0.54 m^2
which is a circle about 800mm or 32 inches diameter.
Don’t believe the exact answer, but it doesn’t look impossible to make it work.
